A tragic incident unfolded today at a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid distribution site, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 Palestinians. The GHF, supported by Israel, reported that 19 individuals were trampled, and one was fatally stabbed during a crowd surge at a center in Khan Younis. The GHF attributed the unrest to armed agitators affiliated with Hamas, although there was no immediate comment from the group.

Palestinian health officials reported 21 deaths due to suffocation at the site, with one medic describing a chaotic scene of overcrowding and crushing. The United Nations rights office in Geneva revealed that at least 875 killings had occurred in the vicinity of aid sites and food convoys in Gaza over the past six weeks, with the majority near GHF distribution points.

The Israeli military acknowledged civilian harm near aid distribution centers and implemented new protocols following these incidents. The GHF, utilizing private US security and logistics firms, delivers supplies to Gaza, bypassing the UN-led system accused by Israel of aiding Hamas militants in misappropriating aid.

Criticism of the GHF’s operational practices intensified, with accusations of mismanagement and negligence leading to chaos and tragedy among civilians. The ongoing conflict in Gaza, triggered by a Hamas attack in October 2023, has exacerbated humanitarian crises and displacement.

In a separate development, the Israeli military announced the completion of a new road in southern Gaza to disrupt Hamas operations. Ceasefire negotiations, mediated by Arab countries with US support, have yet to yield significant progress. Hamas demands the dismantlement of the GHF and the return of UN-led aid mechanisms, while Israel seeks Hamas disarmament and withdrawal from Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance emphasizes disarmament as a prerequisite for ending the conflict. Recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have claimed additional lives, adding to the toll of the prolonged conflict. The casualty figures on both sides underscore the human cost of the protracted hostilities.
