Lucrecia Martel, the acclaimed Argentine filmmaker known for her work on films like “La Cienaga” and “Zama,” recently graced the stage at the Bogotá Audiovisual Market (BAM) for a Masterclass that drew a packed audience of 600 people. Despite using a cane, Martel stood for an hour, sharing her thoughts on a variety of topics ranging from the state of the global film industry to the pressing issues facing our world today.

One of the key points Martel touched on was the importance of training and critical reflection in the field of production. She praised Colombia for emphasizing these aspects and highlighted the need for public policies to support the industry. Martel expressed concern about the environmental crisis, the rise of AI, the dominance of streaming platforms, and the rhetoric of right-wing politics.

She painted a grim picture of the planet on the brink of collapse, with irreversible processes like ocean acidification and the thawing of permafrost threatening the very existence of life on Earth. Martel pondered the purpose of culture and posited that it is a form of ecological warfare, citing Hollywood’s growth during wartime as an example.

Martel also delved into the current landscape of the film industry, expressing worry about the consolidation of power in the hands of a few major companies and platforms. She questioned whether Netflix Latin America truly represents the interests of the region and warned against the dangers of cultural hegemony.

Reflecting on the impact of artificial intelligence, Martel highlighted the anxiety of becoming obsolete in a rapidly changing world. She lamented the lack of budgets in Latin America and urged filmmakers to confront the reality of poverty in the region. Despite these challenges, Martel ended on a hopeful note, urging the audience to invent a future through storytelling and creativity.

In a world where government support for the arts is uncertain, Martel emphasized the need for artists to take responsibility for shaping the future. She stressed that true culture is not about imposing one’s values on others but about creating a better world for future generations. BAM, where Martel delivered her Masterclass, is a platform for industry professionals to come together and exchange ideas.
