Nick Offerman, famous for his role as Ron Swanson on “Parks and Recreation,” recently made a spirited appearance on “The Daily Show” where he passionately criticized President Donald Trump for cutting $267 million in funding for America’s national parks.

In classic Ron Swanson fashion, Offerman expressed his deep love for national parks, stating that they are one of his undeniable passions alongside whiskey, woodworking, and his wife. He highlighted the detrimental impact of budget cuts on national parks, noting that scientists are now being tasked with cleaning toilets due to lack of resources. Offerman humorously commented, “No scientist has the strength to clean the skid marks of a man who’s been eating beans and campfire hot dogs for the past three days! They’re weak.”

Taking a more serious tone, Offerman called out Trump’s decision to cut funding while simultaneously increasing admission fees to generate revenue. He criticized this strategy, pointing out the flawed logic of cutting $267 million only to gain back $90 million. Offerman humorously remarked, “Now, I’m no mathematician, but I believe that’s called shitting the bed. But then again, I didn’t go to Wharton Business College.”

Offerman emphasized the economic and social importance of national parks, citing a report that revealed national parks contributed $55 billion to the U.S. economy in 2023 and employed 415,000 people. He praised national parks as affordable vacation destinations for families, highlighting their accessibility and value to American citizens.

In a closing statement, Offerman compared America without its national parks to McDonald’s without hamburgers, emphasizing the integral role that national parks play in the country’s identity and economy. He concluded by underscoring the necessity of preserving and protecting these natural treasures for future generations.

Offerman’s vocal criticism of Trump extends beyond this appearance, as he has been outspoken about his disagreement with the former president’s policies and behavior. In a recent interview with IndieWire, Offerman debunked the misconception that Ron Swanson would support Trump, asserting that the fictional character would despise him for his disrespect towards women and others.
