In a striking display of political acrobatics, Republicans in both the House and Senate appear to be bending the rules to cater to Donald Trump’s whims as they race against the clock before potentially losing their grip on power next November.

During a recent Judiciary Committee hearing on the nomination of Emil Bove for a federal judgeship, Senate Democrats staged a walkout. Before exiting, ranking member Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) delivered a passionate statement that encapsulated the gravity of the situation.

In his remarks, Booker expressed disbelief and frustration:

“Why are you doing this? This is outrageous. This is a kangaroo court. That’s all we have here.”

“Mr. Chairman, to violate your own rules without adhering to the parliamentarian’s mandates is simply unbelievable. If you wish to force this through, there is a clear and straightforward way to do so within the established guidelines. It seems apparent that you do not want to genuinely listen to your colleagues. This is absolutely wrong.”

“This moment reflects a disturbing lack of respect for one another in this committee. I have been here during times when we held the majority, and I listened to my colleagues’ arguments and heartfelt statements before voting. What we are witnessing now is a rush to confirm one of the most contentious nominees in this administration. God bless America. You are a good man, a decent man.”

“What is it that Donald Trump is saying to you that justifies this behavior, which undermines the decorum and respect essential to our committee? I have listened to many lengthy speeches from my colleagues, considering their objections earnestly. Yet here, we are not engaging in that process. This is wrong, and you know it.”

“Some of the most moderate members of this committee, who have consistently sought bipartisan collaboration, have walked out, and it seems you are indifferent to that.”

“But I know you care, Senator Grassley. This is wrong. Allowing another half-hour for senators to express their views is not too much to ask. It is what the Constitution demands. The Senate, as the world’s most deliberative body, should take adequate time to deliberate. Instead, we are being rushed through this with a false sense of urgency.”

“It is one thing to ignore whistleblowers; it is another to refuse to hold a proper hearing. Denying my colleagues their opportunity to voice dissent against this nominee is simply unacceptable. I know you understand this. The only previous instance in which this rule was overturned by both parties occurred when a minority attempted to obstruct proceedings. This is not that situation. This is about the fundamental ideals of this committee.”

“We must have the ability to listen to one another, even in disagreement, affording each other the time and space to express our views. This is fundamentally wrong and represents an abuse of power that undermines the integrity of this Senate and this committee, which I have been honored to be part of. This is a sham vote, and I join my colleagues in leaving.”

In a bold move, Republicans disregarded procedural rules mandating the presence of at least two minority party members before a vote can take place. Chairman Chuck Grassley proceeded to hold the vote on Bove’s nomination with no Democrats present.

This unprecedented action was taken to silence a whistleblower whose allegations cast doubt on Bove’s qualifications for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.

While the Democratic walkout was significant, Booker’s explanation of their actions was perhaps even more critical. It illustrates a broader issue: the erosion of legal and ethical standards within Congress, a disease that seems to have spread beyond the White House.

Republicans are wielding their power with abandon, and it falls to Democrats to expose this misconduct.
