A tragic incident unfolded along the lakefront on Friday night when a woman in mental distress reported to police that she had drowned her infant son and was attempting to take her own life. The heartbreaking scene took place at the South Shore Cultural Center, located at 7059 South South Shore Drive.

At approximately 9:43 p.m., officers responded to a marine distress call after a witness saw a woman in the water screaming for help. Upon arrival, police encountered a 31-year-old woman displaying signs of a mental health crisis. She confessed to officers that she had drowned her one-year-old son and was trying to end her own life.

Emergency responders transported the woman to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment, while Fire Department divers retrieved the child from the water. Despite being rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, the infant could not be saved. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office later ruled the boy’s death as a homicide by drowning.

As of Saturday evening, no charges had been announced in relation to the incident. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support in our communities.
