Honoring the 81st Anniversary of Guam’s Liberation
Today marks the 81st anniversary of Guam’s liberation from Imperial Japanese control, an occasion for our Nation to celebrate the indomitable spirit, bravery, and unwavering resilience of every hero who fought valiantly to liberate the people of Guam. Their sacrifices not only freed the island but also established a vital foothold that contributed to our victory in the Second World War.
On July 21, 1944, American forces landed on Guam’s shores with the intention of dismantling tyranny and reinstating the promise of American sovereignty in the Pacific. Despite the fierce resistance from Imperial Japanese forces, who were stubbornly trying to defend their position, they ultimately faced the overwhelming power of the U.S. Armed Forces. After three harrowing weeks of intense and bloody combat in jungles, caves, and mountainous terrain, America emerged victorious—regaining control of Guam and positioning its forces to bring the Pacific conflict to a close.
As we reflect on this hard-won victory, it is essential to remember and honor the sacrifice of over 1,200 service members and more than 1,000 residents of Guam who lost their lives in the quest for liberation. Their ultimate sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the cost of freedom.
The liberation of Guam is a pivotal chapter in our Nation’s history, symbolizing a bold reaffirmation of American sovereignty during a time when our future and liberties hung in the balance. Under my leadership, the United States remains steadfast in its commitment to a foreign policy that prioritizes peace through strength. We will not falter in our resolve to defend our interests, protect our citizens, safeguard our territories, and uphold our cherished way of life against any adversaries—be they foreign or domestic.
