The settlement of the Hawaiian Islands is a lesser-known aspect of colonization in the West, overshadowed by the more widely recognized genocide of Indigenous Americans on the mainland. However, Apple TV+‘s new series, “Chief of War,” sheds light on this nearly 30-year-long enterprise through the eyes of Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett.

The story begins with a prophecy foretelling of a great king who would unite the four kingdoms of Hawai’i and end the endless cycle of combat. Ka’iana, portrayed by Momoa, is introduced as the son of a great Maui warrior who seeks peace in a land torn apart by greed and power struggles. Forced into battle by Maui’s King Kahekili, Ka’iana soon realizes the true cost of war and colonization.

As Ka’iana navigates the treacherous political landscape of Hawai’i, he befriends Tony and witnesses the devastating impact of colonizers on his people. With tensions rising between Hawai’i’s War Chief Kamehameha and King Keƍua, Ka’iana must convince them to prepare for threats both within and outside the islands.

“Chief of War” offers a unique perspective on Hawaiian history, with the majority of dialogue in the critically endangered Hawaiian language. While some episodes may feel overwhelming with numerous storylines, Episode 5 stands out as Ka’iana competes in a traditional lava sledding competition to prove his worth.

From the detailed costuming to the captivating visuals, “Chief of War” immerses viewers in the tensions of Hawaiian society and the encroaching presence of outsiders. Like “Shƍgun,” this series is a majestic tale of rebels, home, and allegiance.

The first two episodes of “Chief of War” premiere on Apple TV+ on August 1, with new episodes released weekly on Fridays. Immerse yourself in this sweeping epic of greed, power, and the brutality of war in the beautiful setting of Hawai’i.
