Living a long and healthy life is a goal that many people strive for. There are various strategies that can help you achieve this, such as maintaining social connections, staying active, getting enough sleep, and eating a healthy diet rich in nuts, fruits, and vegetables. However, according to recent research from Ohio State University, there is another factor that could potentially contribute to a longer lifespan: living near the coast.

The study conducted by researchers at Ohio State University analyzed census records for 66,263 individuals to explore the relationship between longevity and proximity to bodies of water. Previous studies have already highlighted the health benefits of living near “blue spaces,” such as oceans and lakes, but this study specifically focused on lifespan.

The findings revealed that individuals who lived near the coast tended to live longer lives compared to those living in urban areas with inland blue spaces, such as lakes or rivers. Coastal residents were estimated to live a year or more longer than the average lifespan of 79 years, while those living near inland waters were likely to have a shorter lifespan of around 78 years.

While the study does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship, it does suggest a significant association between coastal living and longevity. The researchers proposed several factors that may contribute to this phenomenon, including better air quality, fewer extreme weather conditions, and increased opportunities for recreation in coastal areas. Additionally, the higher socioeconomic status associated with coastal living could also play a role in increased longevity.

In contrast, living near inland waters in urban areas was not found to have the same positive impact on lifespan. Factors such as pollution, poverty, lack of physical activity opportunities, and increased risk of flooding in urban settings near inland waters may offset any potential health benefits.

Overall, the study underscores the potential benefits of living near nature, particularly bodies of water, in promoting health and longevity. While further research is needed to explore these findings in more depth, it is clear that environmental factors can have a significant impact on overall well-being.

The research conducted by Ohio State University has been published in the journal Environmental Research, highlighting the importance of considering the impact of our surroundings on our health and longevity. Embracing a lifestyle that incorporates nature and prioritizes access to blue spaces could be a valuable step towards living a longer and healthier life.
