Lorraine Bracco, known for her role as Dr. Jennifer Melfi in HBO’s “The Sopranos,” recently shared her thoughts on the controversial series finale. The finale, which aired in 2007, left fans divided with its abrupt cut-to-black ending that implied the possible death of protagonist Tony Soprano.

Throughout the show, Dr. Melfi and Tony developed a complex relationship as therapist and patient. Despite being aware of Tony’s criminal activities as a mobster, Melfi continued to treat him until she was pressured into ending their sessions. The final scene between the two characters shows Melfi closing the door on Tony, symbolizing the end of their therapeutic relationship.

Bracco revealed her own interpretation of the ending, suggesting that Tony may still be alive and potentially reuniting with Melfi in the future. She expressed her dissatisfaction with how series creator David Chase chose to conclude the show, stating that she believed it was “bad and wrong” to leave such a significant character’s fate unresolved.

Chase himself admitted in a 2015 interview with Variety that he never anticipated the intense debate and discussion that the finale would spark among fans. He explained that the black screen at the end was meant to convey a sense of uncertainty and the importance of not giving up on life’s experiences and connections, despite its inevitable end.

Overall, the ending of “The Sopranos” continues to be a topic of debate and interpretation among viewers, with Bracco’s perspective adding another layer to the discussion. Whether Tony Soprano met his demise in that final scene or if he continues to navigate the criminal underworld, the impact of the show’s conclusion remains a lasting legacy in television history.
