Why the EPA’s Latest Move Could Worsen the Climate Crisis

Why the EPA’s Latest Move Could Worsen the Climate Crisis

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently made a concerning announcement that could have severe consequences for the climate crisis. The proposal to rescind the endangerment finding, a legal determination made in 2009, is a move that not only ignores scientific evidence but also undermines efforts to address climate change.

The endangerment finding established that emissions from activities such as burning fossil fuels are driving climate change and posing a threat to human health and welfare. This finding gave the EPA the authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from various sources, including vehicles, power plants, and oil and gas operations.

By repealing the endangerment finding, the EPA is essentially shirking its responsibility to address climate change in favor of catering to fossil fuel interests. Additionally, the EPA Administrator has proposed repealing greenhouse gas standards for vehicles and power plants, two major sources of emissions in the U.S. These standards were projected to significantly reduce emissions over the next few decades.

This decision to roll back important climate regulations comes at a time when federal clean energy policies are being hindered, and fossil fuel investments are being promoted by the current administration and Congress. This shift away from addressing climate change is a significant setback for U.S. climate action and could lead to a rise in emissions when urgent reductions are needed.

The EPA’s decision to base the rollback of the endangerment finding on a Department of Energy-commissioned report is also troubling. The report, crafted by known climate contrarians, contains misinformation and misrepresentation of scientific findings related to climate change. Scientists whose research was cited in the report have criticized its inaccuracies and distortions.

As the world faces increasingly severe climate impacts such as heatwaves, flooding, tropical cyclones, and wildfires, the need to address climate change has never been more urgent. Denying the reality of these extreme events and their impact on health, livelihoods, and the economy is not only irresponsible but also dangerous.

It is crucial for scientists and individuals who care about the future of the planet to speak up against these destructive actions. Submitting comments to the EPA and DOE and urging representatives in Congress to defend climate action are important steps in holding the government accountable for its decisions.

In a time where facts are being replaced by propaganda, it is essential to stand up for science and advocate for evidence-based policies. The consequences of ignoring climate change and prioritizing fossil fuels over clean energy will have far-reaching impacts on the environment, public health, and future generations. It is time to take action and ensure that science and facts guide decision-making for a sustainable future.
