Washington, D.C. ought to stand as a beacon of national pride and a sanctuary for tourists, residents, and public officials alike. Regrettably, while some journalists and politicians may paint a rosy picture, the stark reality is that our nation’s capital is far from secure.

Let’s delve into the numbers:

  • In 2024, Washington, D.C. recorded a homicide rate of 27.3 per 100,000 residents, marking it as the fourth-highest homicide rate in the nation—almost six times that of New York City and surpassing cities like Atlanta, Chicago, and Compton.
  • If Washington, D.C. were a state, it would boast the highest homicide rate of any state in the U.S.
  • Back in 2012, the homicide rate in Washington, D.C. was a mere 13.9 per 100,000 residents.
  • The murder rate in Washington, D.C. is approximately three times greater than that of Islamabad, Pakistan, and a staggering 18 times higher than that of the communist stronghold, Havana, Cuba.
  • Since 2020, the rate of juvenile arrests in Washington, D.C. has seen a steady increase, with many of those apprehended having previous violent crime arrests.
  • Last year, Washington, D.C. reported 29,348 crimes, including 3,469 violent offenses, 1,026 assaults with dangerous weapons, 2,113 robberies, and 5,139 instances of motor vehicle theft.
  • As of early 2025, nearly 1,600 violent crimes and close to 16,000 total crimes have already been reported in Washington, D.C.
  • Vehicle theft in Washington, D.C. exceeds the national average by more than three times, positioning the city among the most perilous in the world.

    • Carjackings surged by 547% from 2018 to 2023.
    • In 2024, the number of carjackings was three times that of 2018.

  • These statistics paint a troubling picture, yet they likely underrepresent the actual crime levels in Washington, D.C.

    • Allegations have emerged that the Metro Police Department leadership may be manipulating data to present a more favorable image of crime statistics.
    • Many residents express reluctance to report crimes, fearing repercussions.
    • Research indicates that over half of all violent crimes in the U.S. go unreported.
    • A recent report from WUSA-TV highlighted D.C. residents’ frustrations over rising violence, questioning police statistics and demanding genuine action to restore safety in their neighborhoods.
