A young woman bravely confronted her abuser in court, expressing the profound impact his actions had on her life since she was just 11 years old. She tearfully told Paulo Alexandre Serrao Dias that his manipulation and abuse had shattered her sense of safety and trust.

“I didn’t understand what was happening to me back then. He made me believe it was okay, that it was normal,” she shared during Dias’ sentencing at the Christchurch District Court.

“I feel like a part of me was stolen. I struggle to feel safe, to trust others like I used to. Sometimes, I feel consumed by anger.”

The victim, now 19, recounted how Dias, a familiar face to her, assaulted her on two separate occasions years ago. Despite being convicted by a jury, Dias continues to deny the charges.

‘Imprisonment is a price to pay’

Addressing Dias in court, the victim’s stepmother highlighted the toll his actions had taken on her stepdaughter, noting moments when the young woman had lost her will to live.

“She has shown incredible resilience through it all. We wish she never had to endure this pain.

“Your imprisonment is a consequence of the irreparable harm you inflicted upon an innocent child and her family.”

The victim recalled feeling uneasy during the first assault, but Dias reassured her that it was normal and their “secret”. When she protested during the second incident, he ignored her pleas.

It wasn’t until a school seminar on personal safety that the victim realized the abuse was wrong.

Judge Michael Crosbie commended the victim for her courage in coming forward.

“Your bravery will inspire others to speak out. While the justice system is imperfect, steps have been taken to make it more accessible over the years.

“Your impact statement will stay with me. These crimes have a ripple effect that tears families apart.”

Judge Crosbie urged Dias to reflect on his actions and the impact on his victim.

“It’s not uncommon for perpetrators to deny their guilt initially. You preyed on a vulnerable young girl.”

Ultimately, Dias was sentenced to four years and six months in prison and added to the Child Sex Offenders Register.
