The recent success of Warner Bros.’ “Weapons” and Disney’s “Freakier Friday” at the box office has been seen as a triumph for superhero counterprogramming and moderately budgeted films. According to Brent Lang, executive editor of Variety and a seasoned box office reporter, the performance of these two wide release movies over the weekend bodes well for the movie industry as a whole.

Lang pointed out that both “Weapons” and “Freakier Friday” effectively targeted different demographics, with one appealing to younger female audiences and the other to slightly older male audiences. This diversity in genres and ratings demonstrates the potential for the film industry to cater to a wide range of viewers, rather than relying on just one type of release each weekend. This is particularly important for theaters, which thrive on foot traffic and concession sales.

Looking ahead, Lang cautioned that the upcoming weeks will see a lack of major new releases until Disney’s “Tron: Ares” hits theaters on October 10. This highlights the importance of a consistent flow of releases to keep audiences engaged and coming back to the cinema.

In addition to the box office analysis, the latest episode of the “Daily Variety” podcast featured insights from John Hopewell, Variety’s international editor, reporting from Locarno, Switzerland. Hopewell discussed the strategic importance of mid-sized European film festivals like Locarno in the global film industry. These festivals have evolved over the years to not only showcase arthouse films but also serve as crucial marketplaces for film sales, attracting buyers, producers, and sales agents.

Hopewell noted that festivals like Locarno and San Sebastian have become hubs for industry professionals, offering a range of industry sections, attractions, and debates to facilitate networking and business opportunities. This shift towards a more business-oriented approach has transformed these festivals into key players in the global film market.
