Violent Street Robbery Caught on Surveillance Video in Boystown

Two robbers prepare to attack the second victim in this screen grab from surveillance video (Obtained by CWBChicago)

Surveillance video captured a violent street robbery in Boystown early Sunday morning, where two men on bicycles attempted to steal a victim’s phone before targeting a scooter rider nearby.

The incident took place around 1:15 a.m. in the 700 block of West Cornelia Avenue. The footage shows the robbers riding along the sidewalk when one of them abruptly crosses the street to intercept a pedestrian who was engrossed in his phone. A struggle ensues as the robber tries to snatch the victim’s phone, but the man manages to break free and flee, shouting for help.

Meanwhile, a scooter rider stopped in the street just a few steps away. The second robber moves to block him from intervening. Once the initial victim escapes, both attackers turn their attention to the scooter rider, chasing him across the street until he falls. They then proceed to assault and rob him before leaving the scene on foot. Both bicycles used by the robbers were left behind.

The first victim called 911 and reported that one of the robbers brandished a screwdriver during the confrontation, according to CPD dispatch records. He also mentioned hearing another person screaming in the distance, indicating that the attackers may have targeted additional victims.

Chicago police stated that the scooter rider, a 30-year-old man, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in fair condition following the robbery.

The suspects were described as Hispanic males aged between 18 and 25 years old. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

CWBChicago was founded in 2013 by a group of Wrigleyville and Boystown residents who were dissatisfied with the lack of accurate information provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.

Our coverage has since expanded to include Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side areas. However, our core mission remains unchanged: to deliver original public safety reporting with more detail and context than mainstream media outlets.
