Tejano Musician Bobby Pulido Launches Congressional Campaign in Texas’ 15th District
On Wednesday, Tejano music sensation Bobby Pulido announced his candidacy for Texas’ 15th Congressional District, presenting an opportunity for Democrats to challenge the incumbent Republican. Pulido, known for his decades-long career in music, aims to leverage his platform for political change.
“I’ve spent decades using my voice to bring people together,” Pulido expressed in his campaign launch video, available on X. “Now, I’ll use it to fight for the place we call home.”
The South Texas district has emerged as a focal point for Democratic efforts ever since Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz captured the seat in 2022, a district that had traditionally leaned Democratic, winning with over 53 percent of the votes. In the 2024 elections, Donald Trump solidified Republican dominance by securing 59 percent of the vote in the same district, according to calculations from The Downballot. Notably, the recent redistricting in Texas did not alter the district’s demographic landscape significantly.
Democratic leaders have actively sought Pulido’s candidacy, anticipating his moderate positions on issues such as immigration and the oil and gas sector. Late last year, Pulido hinted at his intention to transition from music to politics, looking towards a 2026 run.
Former Democratic Rep. Filemon Vela, who previously represented a neighboring district, has been vocal in his support for Pulido’s candidacy. “I have strongly encouraged Bobby to run for Texas 15,” Vela stated earlier this year. “His professional popularity, political savvy, and center-right approach make him an ideal fit for that district.”
In reaction to Pulido’s announcement, National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Reilly Richardson lauded De La Cruz as a well-respected candidate who has effectively brought solutions to South Texas. He remarked that voters are not inclined to elect “far-left benchwarmers,” and asserted that “Bobby Pulido will be resoundingly rejected along with any radical liberal who wastes their money in this race.”
In his campaign video, Pulido emphasized his commitment to securing the southern border “without destroying families” and his aim to reduce everyday costs for constituents. “Our representatives in Washington lack the courage to confront greedy corporations, billionaire donors, or even their own party to do what’s right for us,” he declared, showcasing his determination to be a different kind of leader. “Well, let me tell you: I do.”
