The Luxury of Time: Huishan Zhang’s Latest Collection
Huishan Zhang has been reflecting on the concept of the “luxury of time.” With the usual fittings, hair and make-up tests, and model castings for London Fashion Week replaced by intimate client appointments and events, Zhang decided to showcase his spring collection through a look book, a departure from his usual runway show. This strategic decision aligned with his business model, allowing the collection to be immediately available for purchase as soon as it went live.
The shift in the fashion calendar over several seasons facilitated this change, giving Zhang more time to engage with his clientele and understand their preferences. By focusing on meeting their demands and expanding their wardrobes, Zhang eliminated the need for last-minute adjustments or surprises. The collection was meticulously planned months in advance, with a clear distinction between “daywear” and “evening wear.”
For daytime looks, Zhang incorporated poplin dresses with inside-out seam construction, lightweight denim, and crepe twin-sets. In contrast, evening wear featured hand-beaded tulle and jacquard dresses, perfect for special occasions. Additionally, Zhang catered to brides-to-be with a stunning ballooning gown and a cream longline coat, drawing inspiration from Truman Capote’s “swans” and naming the collection The Standing Swans.
During a preview, Zhang further categorized his designs based on specific markets, noting that some styles were tailored for the “Upper East Side” clientele. Custom fabrics with intricate details and finishes played a significant role in the collection, showcasing Zhang’s meticulous craftsmanship. The collection featured a cohesive cocoon silhouette, influenced by Constantin Brâncuși’s sculptures, which was evident in skirts, dresses, and jackets through boning, draping, and meticulous fittings.
