Incident of Threatened School Shooting at Benjamin Cardozo High School

A concerning incident unfolded at Benjamin Cardozo High School in Queens, New York, where a 16-year-old student was apprehended with a loaded firearm after making threatening posts on social media about shooting up the school. This alarming situation highlights ongoing issues regarding youth access to firearms and the potential for violence in educational institutions.

Key Details Surrounding the Incident

The student was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and making a terroristic threat after police discovered a semi-automatic handgun in his backpack. The gun, a 9-millimeter Taurus GX4 containing 13 rounds, was among approximately 4,000 guns confiscated from the streets this year, as reported by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch at a press conference on the following day.

Social Media Threats

The incident escalated when the teen allegedly posted an Instagram message indicating his intent to commit violence, stating he was “Boutta Shoot the School Up” due to his frustrations with academic testing. This post prompted Meta, the parent company of Instagram, to notify the FBI, who then passed the information to the NYPD. This swift action enabled authorities to intervene effectively.

Investigation and Findings

An investigation ensued, leading officers to the student’s residence where they discovered two additional rounds of ammunition compatible with the firearm. It was revealed that the handgun had been legally purchased by a licensed holder in South Carolina earlier in the year, with the distance traveled contributing to a time-to-crime estimate of 252 days. The ongoing investigation by the Joint Firearms Task Force, which encompasses both the NYPD and ATF, aims to trace how the weapon arrived in Queens.

In light of the incident, the high school has implemented security scanners—previously not in place—to enhance student safety moving forward.

Arraignment and Legal Proceedings

During the arraignment, the suspect appeared calm and cooperative, dressed in a tan hoodie. Assistant District Attorney Mirza Hadzic expressed that the student had “come dangerously close” to executing a school shooting, referencing the loaded gun found in his possession.

The Defense

The teen’s attorney, Albert Dayan, requested a bail of $100,000, asserting that his client posed no threat to the community, highlighting his timid and polite demeanor. However, the prosecution insisted on the severity of the charges, highlighting the credibility of the threat given the firearm’s presence.

Ultimately, Judge Leigh Cheng determined the bail to be $100,000 with a partial bond of $250,000. While noting the teen’s lack of prior offenses, the judge underscored the serious nature of the allegations, instituting an order of protection for the school’s principal.

Implications on Gun Violence

District Attorney Melinda Katz emphasized the importance of the quick response from law enforcement, stating, “Gun violence has stolen too many young lives in our communities.” The removal of 4,000 illegal firearms from city streets thus far in 2025 signifies a crucial step in protecting community safety. Mayor Eric Adams reiterated the NYPD’s efforts as essential to the city’s ongoing battle against gun violence.

Future Considerations

The student’s next court appearance is scheduled for September 26, and if convicted, he may face a significant prison sentence, although youthful offender status could alter this outcome. Mayor Adams and Police Commissioner Tisch have noted the broader implications of such incidents, advocating for collaboration across all levels of the justice system to ensure public safety.

As this case unfolds, it serves as a stern reminder of the importance of vigilance in preventing gun violence and securing our schools for future generations. Each removal of a firearm from the community is seen as a critical step toward safeguarding innocent lives and reducing the risk of similar threats in the future.
