Dan Marino’s career can hardly be described as conventional. A Pro Football Hall of Famer, Marino spent an impressive 17 years quarterbacking the Miami Dolphins and is frequently hailed as one of the sport’s greatest. Beyond his time on the field, he transitioned to broadcasting with CBS as an analyst for The NFL Today and even starred alongside Jim Carrey in a quirky film that featured a dolphin. Recently, however, Marino opened up about a very personal health challenge—a liver disease known as MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis)—which he was diagnosed with in 2007. He emphasizes that this condition is far more common than many might assume, affecting around one in 20 individuals.

Recognizing the widespread nature of MASH, Marino is eager to raise awareness, recognizing that early detection can be crucial. As part of Novo Nordisk’s “Unordinary Stories” campaign, Marino, alongside other athletes like basketball Hall of Famer Sheryl Swoopes, is sharing their health experiences—his diagnosis being just one part of the story.

From Retirement to Diagnosis

Marino recounted how he began experiencing fatigue after retiring from professional football in 2000. “I had put on a bit of weight and was no longer as active,” he recalled, citing the wear and tear on his knees as significant impediments. Coupled with a not-so-healthy diet, this lifestyle change led to the alarming discovery of his liver condition during a routine check-up in 2007, after which blood tests revealed abnormal liver function.

Understanding MASH

The term MASH might initially sound confusing, but it essentially refers to the accumulation of fat in the liver leading to inflammation—an issue commonly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The condition stems from metabolic dysfunction, implying that there are issues with metabolism that don’t involve excessive alcohol consumption.

According to experts, various factors contribute to the risk of developing MASH, including obesity, high cholesterol, and diabetes. In fact, estimates suggest that roughly 25% of adults in the U.S. may have a less severe form of this condition called MASLD (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease), with a noteworthy proportion progressing to MASH.

As Marino emphasizes, “MASH is the most prevalent non-communicable disease that receives little attention.” Despite affecting so many, many individuals don’t know they have it, which can lead to serious health complications.

Detection and Symptoms

Marino attributes his timely diagnosis to regular health check-ups. “Many people with MASH can go undiagnosed because symptoms can be vague,” he warns. Besides fatigue, individuals might experience abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight fluctuations, or muscle weakness. Notably, early-stage MASH can show minimal to no symptoms, making regular liver function tests vital for detection.

When liver function tests indicate potential issues, physicians may recommend imaging studies or, in some cases, a liver biopsy for a definitive diagnosis. “This is why regular physicals are crucial,” Marino urges.

The Dangers of Ignoring MASH

Untreated MASH can seriously degrade liver health, leading to fibrosis, cirrhosis, or even liver failure—life-threatening conditions that stem from prolonged inflammation and damage. Furthermore, MASH can heighten risks for various cardiovascular issues, including heart attacks and strokes.

Health experts advocate for elevating awareness for MASH on par with other significant health concerns like diabetes and heart disease, given its potential severity.

Managing MASH Through Lifestyle Changes

Marino emphasized the positive aspects of managing MASH, stating, “You can take control of it.” He credits dietary changes, increased physical activity, and abstaining from alcohol as key strategies in managing his condition. “I try to follow a Mediterranean diet, and activity is equally important,” he confirmed.

Incorporating consistent exercise, such as walking and biking, Marino adapts to what feels right for him post-retirement. Weight management plays a crucial role as well; if lifestyle modifications prove insufficient, medications to assist with weight loss and reduce liver fat may be necessary.

Adopting a Positive Outlook

Marino’s message is one of hope and determination. “Staying positive is essential. This can be managed effectively,” he remarked. His resilience, honed on the football field, has equipped him to face life’s challenges, including this recent health hurdle. “It’s about progressing and focusing on what’s essential—your loved ones and your wellbeing.”

Today, even with the challenges he’s faced, Marino continues to stay active in various endeavors, from his ties with the NFL to personal projects and time spent with family. His journey through MASH exemplifies the triumph of perseverance over adversity, demonstrating that with the right mindset and support, tackling health issues is indeed possible.
