In an innovative step into the creative realm, Google has unveiled Mixboard, a cutting-edge AI project that allows users to create personalized mood boards, vying for attention in a space largely dominated by Pinterest.

This new tool serves as a direct competitor to Pinterest’s collage feature, enabling users to curate collections of images and ideas from their favorite Pins and more.

What sets Mixboard apart is its ability to kickstart creativity without needing an existing image library. Users can simply begin with text prompts, prompting the AI to generate ideas and visuals from scratch. Additionally, pre-filled boards are available for those in need of a creative nudge.

The service is currently offered as a public beta in the United States, accessible through Google Labs.

Once users generate images with the help of AI, they can request modifications or even blend different visuals together, thanks to Google’s newly launched image-editing model known as Nano Banana, praised for its capacity to execute intricate edits and produce authentic-looking images.

Following its introduction, Google’s Gemini AI app quickly ascended to the top ranking in the U.S. App Store, pushing out ChatGPT.

Mixboard caters to the increasing interest in tools powered by Nano Banana, suggesting potential applications in home decor brainstorming, event planning, DIY projects, and more, encompassing both imagery and text.

Younger demographics have demonstrated a growing inclination toward digital mood boards. Pinterest recently experienced viral success with a dedicated app named Shuffles, which was particularly popular among Gen Z users for crafting engaging TikTok videos. Features from this standalone app were later incorporated into Pinterest itself. Other startups have also ventured into this creative domain, including Landing (now discontinued) and Verse, an AI-driven creative application that has notably inspired Mixboard’s development. Furthermore, Depop has also introduced a new collage creation tool, aimed at helping users to stylishly present and sell their fashion collections.

Mixboard enhances the mood board experience with features that allow users to “regenerate” images for more inspiration or request the AI to produce images similar to existing selections. Additionally, the AI can generate narrative text based on the visuals present on users’ boards.

For those eager to explore Mixboard, U.S. residents can head over to labs.google/mixboard to dive in. A Discord community is also available for users to connect and share ideas.
