Since its debut in 2018, Yellowstone has captivated audiences with the saga of the Dutton family, leading to the creation of six spinoffs for the Paramount Network, though not without delays.
The series centers on a formidable family managing the largest contiguous ranch in the U.S. While thriving, they face challenges from land developers, a Native American reservation, and America’s first national park.
From the mind of creator Taylor Sheridan, the show has inspired multiple offshoots. Even with this expanding universe, Sheridan remains committed to his original narrative. Following the launch of 1883, he expressed contentment with its sole season.
In February 2022, Sheridan shared with Deadline that he doesn’t prefer neatly concluded stories where everyone lives happily ever after. Reflecting on the 1883 finale, which saw its characters settle in Montana, he noted his intent to create a series that stands independently, engaging viewers regardless of their familiarity with Yellowstone.
At that time, Sheridan explained his choice for a “close-ended” finale, allowing exploration of different eras in upcoming Yellowstone projects. He emphasized that these are not merely spinoffs but complete stories with shared origins, aiming for each new installment to provide a rich experience even for those unfamiliar with 1883 or Yellowstone.
In October 2025, it was announced that Sheridan secured a five-year comprehensive agreement for film, TV, and streaming with NBCUniversal, commencing January 1, 2029, following the end of his Paramount contract in 2028.
