Overview of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms:

  • Scheduled to debut in 2026
  • Focuses on the knight and his squire’s journey
  • Serves as the second prequel to Game of Thrones

The anticipation builds for the second spin-off of Game of Thrones. This winter, audiences will journey back to the universe crafted by George R.R. Martin with Ser Duncan the Tall and his youthful squire, Egg.

The upcoming HBO series, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, unfolds between the timelines of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. Unlike its predecessors, this narrative centers on the exploits of a wandering knight along with his squire, distancing itself from the political dynamics of powerful families.

Here’s what we currently know about this exciting new installment inspired by George R.R. Martin’s universe.

Release Date for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

The Dunk and Egg saga will launch on HBO Max in January 2026. Subscription plans start at $9.99 monthly with ads.

Fans in the UK can watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on Sky Atlantic or stream it on Now. Now’s entertainment packages begin at £9.99 monthly, with promotional offers around £4.99 for longer commitments.

Filming for the show began in June 2024. Although it was initially slated for a summer 2025 debut on HBO Max, the date has since been postponed.

Plot Details of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

This prequel series draws inspiration from Tales of Dunk and Egg, a collection of three stories authored by George R.R. Martin. It chronicles the adventures of the noble Ser Duncan the Tall (referred to as Dunk) and his young squire, Egg (who later becomes King Aegon V Targaryen).

The story is set 72 years following House of the Dragon and 90 years preceding Game of Thrones. The first season is anticipated to concentrate on the initial tale, titled The Hedge Knight, which narrates Dunk and Egg’s fateful meeting and Dunk’s confrontation with Prince Aerion Targaryen.

The official series synopsis reads:

Set a century prior to the events portrayed in Game of Thrones, two unexpected heroes roamed Westeros: a naive yet brave knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his small squire, Egg. This tale unfolds during a time when the Targaryen dynasty still ruled the Iron Throne and the recollections of the last dragon lingered—great destinies, formidable adversaries, and perilous adventures awaited these remarkable friends.

George R.R. Martin has expressed that The Hedge Knight resonates with Game of Thrones:

The Dunk & Egg novellas are substantive stories akin to A Song of Ice and Fire rather than the fantasy history found in Fire & Blood. The narratives are vivid on the page, and our ambition is to faithfully adapt these tales for the screen.

Cast and Crew of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

The show boasts executive producers such as George R.R. Martin, Ira Parker (a contributor from House of the Dragon season 1), and Ryan Condal (showrunner of House of the Dragon). Both Parker and Martin are also involved as writers.

Three episodes of the six-episode series will be helmed by director Sarah Adina Smith.

HBO has additionally revealed some of the cast featured in the show.

  • Sam Spruell – Maekar Targaryen, Baelor’s younger sibling
  • Finn Bennett – Aerion Targaryen, known as the Brightflame, Maekar’s second son
  • Tanzyn Crawford – Tanselle, a Dornish puppeteer
  • Daniel Ings – Ser Lyonel Baratheon, famously known as the Laughing Storm, head of House Baratheon

Trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

At this moment, a complete trailer is not available. Nonetheless, HBO has shared a teaser showcasing major releases for 2024 and 2025, which includes the inaugural visuals of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms featuring both Duncan and Egg around the 1:10 mark.

Other Game of Thrones Prequels Available

The only current Game of Thrones prequel is House of the Dragon – which had its second season released last year.

Beyond The Hedge Knight, HBO is developing a series centered around the Aegon Conquest, which chronologically occurs 300 years before Game of Thrones. This series will depict Aegon Targaryen’s arrival in Westeros, along with his sister wives Rhaenys and Visenya and their dragons.

Additionally, a show titled Nine Voyages will follow Lord Corlys Velaryon, a key character from House of the Dragon, chronicling his perilous adventures around the globe’s most enigmatic locales.

Another prequel, 10,000 Ships, will tell the tale of Princess Nymeria, who lived 1,000 years before Game of Thrones. After the Valyrian conquest of her land, Nymeria amassed a vast fleet and journeyed to Dorne, where she formed an alliance by marrying a lord from House Martell.

Moreover, HBO is exploring an animated series set in Yi Ti, a lush nation located in Essos that, according to George R.R. Martin, embodies the fantasy equivalent of medieval China.
