BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
On March 25, 1821, the battle cry “Freedom or Death” ignited a revolution as Greek patriots rose against the Ottoman Empire, ultimately securing independence and establishing a sovereign Greek state. Today, as we commemorate the 204th anniversary of Greek Independence Day, we pay tribute to this valiant struggle for freedom and the timeless democratic principles that continue to inspire people around the globe.
The United States shares a profound connection with Greece, rooted in both ancient history and contemporary values. Our nation is intertwined with Greece through a shared pursuit of self-governance, liberation, and renewal. The Founding Fathers drew upon Greek philosophers and statesmen to formulate the foundational principles of our Republic, principles enshrined in our Constitution. Moreover, the Greek influence permeates our cultural landscape, enriching our arts, architecture, language, literature, academia, and military traditions. Throughout the United States, the contributions of Greek Americans breathe life into our communities, showcasing a vibrant legacy characterized by family, faith, hospitality, and civic duty.
Greece stands as one of America’s oldest allies, a cherished strategic partner, and a vital member of NATO. We acknowledge the collaboration of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in fostering our economic and diplomatic ties, creating avenues for cooperation across key sectors such as energy, science, technology, shipping, logistics, and defense. The ongoing presence of naval forces at Souda Bay and the joint military training exercises reflect our unwavering commitment to enhancing warfighting capabilities and underscore the importance of our mutual security and stability in Europe.
On this significant day, we take a moment to celebrate Hellenic independence, honor individuals of Greek descent worldwide, and recognize the enduring camaraderie among nations that uphold democracy, patriotism, prosperity, and peace.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim March 25, 2025, as Greek Independence Day: A National Day of Celebration of Greek and American Democracy. I urge the citizens of the United States to observe this day with meaningful ceremonies and activities.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-fourth day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.
DONALD J. TRUMP
