A groundbreaking new device has been developed to help individuals monitor their stress levels from the comfort of their own homes. Published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, this innovative dental floss pick is equipped with a built-in sensor that can accurately detect levels of the stress hormone cortisol in just a matter of minutes. This advancement could revolutionize the way people manage their stress and seek help when needed.

Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on both physical and mental health, leading to conditions such as heart disease and mental disorders. Recognizing and addressing rising stress levels early on is crucial, but traditional methods like daily blood tests at a doctor’s office are not practical for most individuals. Self-reported questionnaires can also be subjective. This is why researchers have been focusing on developing point-of-care tests that can measure cortisol levels in saliva, which closely reflect the hormone’s concentrations in the blood.

While saliva tests have shown promise, many of them require users to remember to perform complex analyses or use bulky mouthguards. Additionally, the stress of conducting a test can actually cause stress levels to spike. This is where the new dental floss pick comes in. By integrating a cortisol sensor into a device that people already use daily, researchers hope to make stress monitoring more accessible and convenient for everyone.

The dental pick features floss that collects saliva, which is then transported to a flexible electrochemical sensor embedded in the handle. The sensor, made of an electrode with an electropolymerized molecularly imprinted polymer (eMIP), works by detecting cortisol molecules in the saliva. The strength of the signal produced by the sensor corresponds to the amount of cortisol present, which is wirelessly transmitted to a mobile device for analysis. Once the saliva is analyzed, it can be safely disposed of.

In testing, the device proved to be sensitive enough to detect small increases in cortisol levels that could indicate early signs of stress. When compared to the commonly used ELISA saliva test, the dental flosser performed just as well in measuring cortisol levels in real human saliva samples. Researchers believe that this device could be one of the best-performing cortisol sensors to date and have potential applications for detecting other important salivary molecules in the future.

Overall, this innovative dental floss pick offers a simple and effective way for individuals to monitor their stress levels and take proactive steps towards managing their overall well-being. With further advancements and modifications, this technology could have a significant impact on how we approach stress management in the future.
