Ai Weiwei is a renowned artist-activist known for his powerful and thought-provoking installations that tackle cultural heritage and societal issues. From his iconic installation of 100 million hand-painted porcelain sunflower seeds at Tate Modern to wrapping architectural columns in salvaged life vests worn by refugees, Ai’s work resonates on a global scale.

His practice spans various mediums, including large-scale installations, video, architecture, photography, and public art. TASCHEN is set to release a fully revised monograph titled “Ai Weiwei. Updated Edition,” which builds upon the original volume published a decade ago.

The new edition coincides with Ai’s first trip back to China after a decade of uncertainty following his departure from the country due to its hostility towards his critical work. It chronicles his journey from his time in New York City in the 1980s to his multimedia Zodiac series and recent LEGO compositions.

The book showcases Ai’s diverse body of work, from his reinterpretation of a Han Dynasty urn with the Coca-Cola logo to his transformation of salvaged beams and pillars from Qing Dynasty temples into contemporary sculptures. It also features his poignant documentary “Human Flow,” which sheds light on the global refugee crisis.

One of Ai’s most famous installations, consisting of LEGO bricks depicting Vincent van Gogh’s “Wheatfield with Crows,” is also highlighted in the book. Additionally, colorful editions of his Zodiac animal series and black-and-white photos of his monumental porcelain sunflower seed installation at Tate Modern are featured.

“Ai Weiwei. Updated Edition” is a comprehensive and visually stunning exploration of Ai’s impactful work. Pre-order your copy now and delve into the world of this influential artist-activist.
