Alvaro Urbano: Preserving the Beauty of Nature Through Metal Sculptures

Nature is a fleeting beauty, transitioning from lush greenery to bare branches in the blink of an eye. Just like the missed watering of a houseplant can lead to browning leaves, the natural world is constantly changing. However, artist Álvaro Urbano seeks to capture this transience through his unique metal sculptures, immortalizing the fleeting moments of life.

Urbano’s work revolves around sculpting common plants from metal, transforming delicate and vulnerable life forms into sturdy materials. By casting these plants in metal and painting them to mimic their colors and textures, he creates “small monuments of things that normally would disappear or change in a few days, or in minutes,” as the artist describes.

Drawing inspiration from theater and architecture, Urbano not only creates standalone sculptures but immersive scenes. His artworks often leave a trail of leaves on the floor or seem to grow directly from the gallery wall, with knotted branches reaching out into the space. This immersive quality allows viewers to feel like witnesses to a scene that has already begun, adding a sense of drama and life to the sculptures.

Currently residing and working between Paris and Berlin, Urbano’s work can be viewed at Spore Initiative in Berlin. His sculptures, such as “TABLEAU VIVANT (Dogwood)” and “Hotel Gazmira (Musa acuminata),” showcase his talent for capturing the delicate beauty of nature in a lasting and impactful way.

Through his metal sculptures, Urbano invites viewers to appreciate the beauty of nature and the transient moments that often go unnoticed. By preserving these fleeting moments in metal, he creates a lasting tribute to the ever-changing world around us.
