The U.S. government has fined American Airlines $50 million for failing to provide wheelchair assistance to passengers with disabilities and damaging thousands of wheelchairs over a five-year period. The Transportation Department reported that some wheelchair users were injured due to these incidents, but did not specify the number.

American Airlines stated that they have made significant investments to improve the handling of wheelchairs and will receive a credit of $25 million for these investments and compensation paid to affected passengers. The incidents in question occurred between 2019 and 2023 and were prompted by three formal complaints from the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

An investigation highlighted an incident at Miami International Airport where workers mishandled a wheelchair, causing it to crash and skid across the concrete. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg noted that American Airlines was one of the worst offenders, but similar investigations are ongoing for other airlines as well.

American Airlines mishandled over 10,760 wheelchairs and mobility scooters from 2019 to 2023, while Southwest Airlines had more incidents with over 11,100 mishandled items. Spirit Airlines had the highest percentage of errors in several years. American Airlines stated that they have invested over $175 million this year to enhance the travel experience for people with disabilities.

Despite improvements, the rate of mishandling wheelchairs and power scooters has decreased by more than 20%. The penalty imposed on American Airlines is significantly higher than previous fines for similar violations, reflecting the large number of incidents and damage to wheelchairs.

Federal regulations mandate airlines to promptly return undamaged wheelchairs to customers after flights and assist passengers with disabilities at airports and during boarding. Airlines are responsible for repairing or replacing damaged wheelchairs, but advocates argue that this process can leave users without suitable mobility options for weeks.
