The American Cancer Society has discreetly canceled its forthcoming Wine and Spirits Industry’s Gala, a spokesperson disclosed to STAT. This event, known for decades as a lively Manhattan gathering that raised funds from the alcohol industry, was originally planned for October at the renowned Rainbow Room.

In an email, spokesperson Michele Money-Carson stated that the society has “decided to sunset the Wine & Spirits Industry Gala, and the October event will not take place.” This decision is part of the organization’s continuous review of how its events and fundraising activities align with its mission and prevention guidelines.

STAT, in its “Deadliest Drug” series exploring the impact of alcohol misuse, reported earlier this summer that the American Cancer Society had accumulated at least $22 million over the years from wine and liquor executives. This has created a perception issue for the charity, which is dedicated to combating cancer. According to some, including a former executive of the cancer society, the gala posed a troubling conflict of interest, especially given the established connections between alcohol consumption and cancer.
