Doug Kiker, “The Singing Garbage Man” from American Idol, Passes Away at 32

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Doug Kiker, the beloved American Idol contestant known as “The Singing Garbage Man.” Kiker, who captured the hearts of viewers during the show’s 18th season, died at the age of 32. His audition performance of “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts went viral and endeared him to fans around the world.

According to TMZ, Kiker passed away on Monday, and the cause of his death has not been disclosed. His sister, Angela Evans, took to Facebook to share the news and seek assistance in bringing him home from Denver, Colorado, and arranging a fitting memorial for him.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover Kiker’s expenses and ensure that he receives a proper farewell. The organizers expressed their gratitude for any contributions toward honoring his memory and easing the financial burden on his family during this difficult time.

In his memorable audition in Savannah, Georgia in 2020, Kiker shared that he worked as a garbage man and had no formal singing experience or training. He auditioned to inspire his young daughter and moved the judges to tears with his heartfelt performance.

Despite being eliminated after the Genre Challenge in Hollywood, Kiker’s popularity led to an invitation to perform at the American Idol finale, where he sang “Bless the Broken Road” once more, this time alongside Rascal Flatts.

While fans mourned his passing on social media, Kiker’s journey was not without its challenges. In 2021, he was arrested on domestic violence charges in Alabama. Following his release, he announced a film adaptation about his life titled “Garbage Man,” which was released on Vimeo in January 2022.
