Americans overwhelmingly support the idea of the United States being a world leader in science, according to a recent report from the Pew Research Center. The report, which surveyed over 5,000 individuals in October 2025, found that a majority of Americans believe it is crucial for the U.S. to excel in the field of science.

The data revealed that the number of people who hold this view has increased by five percentage points since 2023. However, there is a noticeable divide in opinions between Democrats and Republicans. While Republicans are more positive about the country’s standing in science, Democrats are increasingly concerned that the U.S. is falling behind other nations in scientific advancements. In fact, the proportion of Democrats who believe the U.S. is losing ground in science has jumped by 28 percentage points between 2023 and 2025.

The report also highlighted the impact of federal funding cuts for science during the Trump administration. Despite these cuts, the majority of Americans still see federal investments in science as valuable. However, Republican voters are more inclined to support private companies playing a significant role in scientific research.

Lawmakers from both parties have made efforts to restore federal funding for science agencies, showing bipartisan support for scientific advancements. Overall, Americans’ trust in science and scientists remains strong, although it has not fully recovered from the trust crisis that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report emphasizes the importance of supporting science journalism and the role it plays in shaping public opinion and policy decisions. By subscribing to publications like Scientific American, individuals can ensure that meaningful research and discoveries are reported, and that the value of science is recognized in society.

In conclusion, the Pew Research Center’s report highlights the ongoing importance of science in American society and the need for continued support for scientific advancements. Despite political divides, the majority of Americans agree on the significance of the U.S. maintaining its position as a global leader in science.
