Anduril Industries Faces Setbacks in Testing Autonomous Weapons Systems

A recent report by the Wall Street Journal has revealed that defense tech startup Anduril Industries has encountered several setbacks during the testing of its autonomous weapons systems. These setbacks include failures of more than a dozen drone boats during a Navy exercise off California in May, mechanical issues that damaged the engine of Anduril’s unmanned jet fighter Fury, and a test of its Anvil counterdrone system that resulted in a 22-acre fire in Oregon.

Founded in 2017 by Palmer Luckey, Anduril raised $2.5 billion in June at a valuation of $30.5 billion, with funding from Founders Fund. The company has secured military contracts to develop autonomous aircraft and counter-drone systems.

In addition to testing failures, Anduril has also faced challenges in Ukraine. Front-line soldiers with Ukraine’s SBU security service reported issues with Anduril’s Altius loitering drones, which crashed and failed to hit targets. These issues led Ukrainian forces to stop using the drones in 2024. Anduril maintains that these challenges are common in weapons development and that its engineering team is making significant progress.
