Anthropic CEO Calls Out OpenAI for Defense Deal

Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei is not pleased with OpenAI chief Sam Altman’s recent actions. In a memo to staff, reported by The Information, Amodei criticized OpenAI’s collaboration with the Department of Defense, labeling it as “safety theater.”

Amodei highlighted the stark difference in approach between Anthropic and OpenAI when it came to dealing with the DoD. He emphasized that while OpenAI prioritized appeasing employees, Anthropic was focused on preventing potential abuses of its technology.

Last week, Anthropic and the U.S. Department of Defense failed to reach an agreement regarding the military’s request for unrestricted access to Anthropic’s AI technology. Despite holding a $200 million contract with the military, Anthropic insisted on safeguards against the use of its AI for domestic mass surveillance or autonomous weaponry.

Instead of reaching an agreement with Anthropic, the DoD opted to strike a deal with OpenAI. Sam Altman announced that the new defense contract with OpenAI would include protections similar to those demanded by Anthropic.

In response, Amodei accused Altman of spreading misinformation and portraying himself as a peacemaker and dealmaker. Amodei’s criticism stemmed from OpenAI’s assertion that its contract with the DoD aligns with ethical boundaries, a claim that Anthropic refuted.

Anthropic took issue with the DoD’s requirement for its AI to be available for “any lawful use,” while OpenAI stated that its contract allowed for use in “all lawful purposes.” The discrepancy in interpretations led to a public dispute between the two AI companies.

While OpenAI reassured that it would not permit the use of its technology for illegal activities such as mass domestic surveillance, critics raised concerns about the potential for legal definitions to evolve over time. The uncertainty surrounding future regulations prompted skepticism towards OpenAI’s defense deal.

Following OpenAI’s collaboration with the DoD, Anthropic observed a significant increase in uninstalls of ChatGPT, indicating a backlash from the public. Amodei expressed his concern about the negative perception surrounding OpenAI’s actions and emphasized the importance of maintaining trust among employees.

Despite facing criticism from some quarters, Amodei remains steadfast in his commitment to ethical AI practices and transparency in business dealings. The ongoing rivalry between Anthropic and OpenAI underscores the complex ethical considerations surrounding AI technology and its applications in defense scenarios.
