The second Trump administration exemplifies this stance, as it seems federal agencies have ceased to genuinely regulate the industries under their supervision. Instead, they appear to collaborate with large corporations, potentially at the expense of public welfare.
Officials in the Trump administration seemingly have no qualms about misleading Congress, given the Republican control of both the House and Senate.
During a congressional testimony, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin faced a probing question from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). She inquired, “Secretary Kennedy was here a couple of weeks ago, and when asked about glyphosate and the rollbacks on protections against toxic chemicals, he said we would have to ask Lee Zeldin about that. So you’re here before us today. Administrator Zeldin, have you ever participated in a meeting with Bayer where you discussed the legal or litigation issues the company was facing?”
Zeldin responded, “No, I never did. My meeting with them was very brief, and that topic did not come up.”
Ocasio-Cortez further asked, “Are you aware of any outreach that they would have in your agency about this?”
Zeldin replied, “I directly had a brief meeting. Okay. But it was a brief meet and greet, and that topic did not come up.”
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez introduced visitor logs into the congressional record and asked Zeldin again, “You’re certain they didn’t bring up anything regarding your work?”
Zeldin maintained his position, “I’m telling you a hundred percent. Absolutely. Maybe there was some brainstorming that was done beforehand of potential topics. Are you aware of any? That topic was not brought up.”
The New York congresswoman then made a decisive point.
