Artificial Intelligence 101: An Accessible Primer on How AI Works
SHARE

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a significant topic of discussion in recent years, prompting a surge in data center development across the United States and globally. This rapid expansion is driving up electricity demand, leading to potential health and climate costs as well as increased electricity prices for consumers. While the decision-making process around AI usage, investment, and impact is complex, it is essential to have a solid understanding of the basics of AI.

What is AI, and how does it work? AI encompasses systems that aim to mimic human intelligence, with machine learning (ML) being a key component. ML involves using statistical algorithms to make predictions based on known data, such as recommendation algorithms used by platforms like Netflix and Spotify. Neural networks, inspired by the human brain’s neurons, are a popular algorithm in AI, with deep learning being a more advanced version. Large language models (LLMs), like ChatGPT and Claude, fall under the category of neural networks and are widely recognized in the AI space.

AI models consist of weights and biases stored in a computer’s memory, requiring significant computational resources to run efficiently. GPUs, with their parallel processing capabilities, are essential for running complex AI models like LLMs. The training process involves refining the model’s assumptions through iterations with large datasets, while inference is the process of using the model to make predictions based on input data.

Data centers play a crucial role in powering AI due to the scale and memory requirements of modern models. Hyperscale data centers operated by tech giants can consume immense amounts of electricity, with AI training and deployment being major drivers of energy demand. As AI continues to evolve, the need for specialized facilities to support its operations will only increase.

AI models are designed to make predictions based on input data and assumptions, without possessing true knowledge or continuous learning capabilities. Understanding the limitations of AI models is vital for making informed decisions about their use and impact. Despite the incredible potential of AI in various fields, including climate modeling and media streaming, it is essential to consider the environmental and social costs associated with its development and deployment.

In conclusion, the decisions made now regarding how data centers are powered and the investment in clean energy will shape the future costs and benefits of AI. Public awareness and understanding of AI fundamentals are crucial for engaging in meaningful conversations about its implications. By staying informed and actively participating in the dialogue around AI, we can navigate the complexities of this rapidly advancing technology.
