Officials announced on Wednesday that they have successfully identified the remains of 14 out of 16 individuals who lost their lives in a devastating explosion at a Tennessee explosives manufacturing facility last week. Efforts are ongoing to safely disarm potentially hazardous materials at the site, which may take several weeks as investigators seek to determine the cause of the blast.
During a press briefing, Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis revealed that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has confirmed the identities of 14 victims involved in the explosion that occurred on Friday at the Accurate Energetic Systems plant. The agency has employed a rapid DNA profiling technique, which generates a DNA profile in under two hours, utilizing samples taken from family members for comparison with the remains.
The individuals who perished were aged between 25 to 60 years old. “The comfort these families need is closure, and the DNA verification provides part of that,” commented Davis regarding the identification process.
Davis indicated that it remains uncertain how long it will take to clear the scene and gather crucial evidence.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if we find ourselves back here in two months,” Davis observed, noting the scale and complexity of the site and the meticulous care needed for processing the evidence.
Jamey VanVliet, the lead agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Nashville division, stated that extensive work is still necessary at the expansive site.
Accurate Energetic Systems is known for providing and researching military-grade explosives and has a workforce of around 150, according to data from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.
The facility spans over 1,300 acres (526 hectares) in a densely forested region of middle Tennessee. It features eight specialized production properties and a laboratory, located near the Hickman and Humphreys county border in unincorporated Bucksnort, roughly 60 miles (97 kilometers) southwest of Nashville.
The initial explosion was reported to be felt over 20 miles (32 kilometers) away, leaving behind a scene of twisted metal and charred vehicles.

Authorities have confirmed that there were no survivors, and fragments of evidence from the explosion may extend for miles.
“For the most part, we have successfully removed hazardous substances and live explosives from the location,” VanVliet noted. “However, it is possible that more could be discovered as we continue our investigation, so we remain aware of that.”
<p"The initial stages also involve respectfully recovering the remains of the victims from the site.”
Authorities have yet to specify which materials were present in the building that exploded. Davis emphasized that this matter remains under investigation and that it’s “far too early” to determine the explosion’s point of origin.
Records indicate that the company has received numerous contracts from the military, predominantly from the U.S. Army and Navy, to produce various munitions and explosive materials, which include bulk explosives, landmines, and small breaching charges, such as C4.
