The 2024 Humanitas Prize recipients were revealed at a ceremony held at Avalon Hollywood, honoring outstanding work in TV, film, and documentaries. Ava DuVernay’s “Origins” took home the award for drama feature, acknowledging the power of storytelling in the medium.

In the TV categories, “Hacks,” “Fellow Travelers,” and “Black Cake” emerged as winners for comedy teleplay, limited series teleplay, and drama teleplay respectively. Other notable winners included Andrea Nevins and Graham Clark for the documentary “The Cowboy and the Queen” and Gavin Steckler for the comedy feature “Jules.”

The Humanitas Prize, celebrating its 50th anniversary, recognizes writers who explore the human condition in a meaningful way. Hosted by June Diane Raphael and Paul Scheer, the event highlighted the importance of storytelling and the impact it can have on society.

In addition to the main awards, the ceremony also presented the 2024 New Voices Fellowship, David and Lynn Angell College Comedy Award, Carol Mendelsohn College Drama Award, and the new Starz #TakeTheLead Award to “Snowfall” writer Jeanine Daniels.

Here are some of the winners of the 2024 Humanitas Prize:

– Drama Teleplay: “Black Cake” (“Nine Night”) by Marissa Jo Cerar
– Comedy Teleplay: “Hacks” (“Yes, And”) by Samantha Riley, Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, Paul W. Downs
– Limited Series Teleplay: “Fellow Travelers” (“Your Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire”) by Anya Leta
– Drama Feature Film: “Origins” by Ava DuVernay
– Comedy Feature Film: “Jules” by Gavin Steckler
– Documentary: “The Cowboy and the Queen” by Andrea Nevins, Graham Clark
– Family Feature Film: “Nimona” by Robert L. Baird, Lloyd Taylor
– Short Film: “The Ballad of Tita and the Machines” by Luis Antonio Aldana, Miguel Angel Caballero

The Humanitas Prize ceremony also supports various programs aimed at nurturing new voices in the industry, including the New Voices Fellowship, College Screenwriting Awards, and initiatives like “Industry 101” and “The Writers Room” for aspiring writers.
