President Trump Demands Return of Bagram Airfield from Taliban
President Donald Trump is intensifying his push for the return of Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, threatening the Taliban, who took control of the base after the US withdrew from the country in 2021.
Trump took to Truth Social on Saturday night to declare, “If Afghanistan doesn’t give Bagram Airbase back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!!”
Trump did not specify the consequences for the Taliban if they do not comply with his demands, leaving the nature of the threat ambiguous. It remains uncertain what role the US military would play in reclaiming the vital airfield.
During a joint appearance with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump expressed his intent to regain control of Bagram Air Base, stating, “We’re trying to get it back because they need things from us.”
Highlighting the strategic significance of the base, Trump emphasized, “We want that base back, but one of the reasons we want the base is, as you know, it’s an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons.”
