Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) urged Maine Democrat Graham Platner to withdraw from the Senate race on Tuesday following a POLITICO report alleging that Platner had coerced a former girlfriend into sexual activity.
In a statement, Sanders remarked, “I have spoken with Graham Platner about the best path forward for Maine. In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside.”
Platner responded to these allegations, firmly denying them and asserting that “any accusation of non-consensual behavior is categorically untrue.”
These comments mark Sanders’ first public statement about Platner since the POLITICO article, despite previous support for Platner amid other controversies. On Monday night, numerous elected Democrats and officials joined the call for Platner to resign.
Following the report’s publication, Platner released a video stating he was “taking the time to reflect on the best path forward” regarding his candidacy.
Democrats in Maine are already preparing to find a replacement for Platner, a process contingent on his decision to step down. According to Maine law, Platner has until July 13 to decide. If he withdraws, the state Democratic Party will select a replacement by July 27.
Sanders’ recommendation is significant as he had previously endorsed and campaigned with Platner in Maine. Platner’s campaign did not immediately respond to inquiries about Sanders’ stance.
Many former supporters of Platner, including progressive commentators and elected officials, have also urged him to end his campaign. On Monday, both the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the top Senate super PAC withdrew their financial backing, citing their inability to support Platner against GOP Sen. Susan Collins.
This mass withdrawal of support follows the party’s earlier backing of Platner through other controversies, such as resurfaced social media posts and a Nazi-linked tattoo.
The POLITICO report detailed allegations from 41-year-old Maine resident Jenny Racicot, who claimed Platner entered her home uninvited nearly five years ago, forcing himself on her despite her protests. This report has led the party to withdraw their support for Platner.
