I think it speaks to the power and influence that the tech industry has amassed over the years. Silicon Valley has become a significant player not only in the business world but also in politics and policy-making. It’s a reflection of how deeply intertwined technology and society have become, and the impact that tech leaders can have on shaping the future.

At the same time, it raises important questions about the balance of power and the potential for conflicts of interest. When individuals who have made their fortunes in tech now have the ear of policymakers, there is a risk that decisions may be made that prioritize the interests of the tech industry over the broader public good. It’s a complex dynamic that requires careful scrutiny and oversight to ensure that the best interests of society are being served.

As someone who has been a part of the tech industry for many years, I think it’s important for leaders in Silicon Valley to approach their newfound influence with humility and a sense of responsibility. We have a unique opportunity to drive positive change and shape a better future for everyone, but we must do so with integrity and a commitment to serving the greater good.

What are your thoughts on the 996 working hour system that many young founders have adopted?

I think the 996 working hour system is a concerning trend that can have negative implications for both individual well-being and overall productivity. While hard work and dedication are important qualities in any successful entrepreneur, there is a fine line between dedication and burnout. Working excessively long hours can lead to fatigue, mental health issues, and a lack of work-life balance.

It’s essential for young founders to prioritize their well-being and recognize that sustainable success requires a healthy balance between work and personal life. Overworking oneself is not a badge of honor, and it’s important to set boundaries and take care of oneself to ensure long-term success and happiness.

How do you see AI reshaping the workforce and what does it mean for people’s careers?

AI is already transforming the workforce in significant ways, automating routine tasks and changing the skills and qualifications needed to succeed in the modern economy. While AI holds great potential for increasing efficiency and innovation, it also poses challenges in terms of job displacement and the need for upskilling and reskilling.

For individuals, this means being adaptable and continuously learning new skills to stay relevant in a rapidly changing job market. Embracing lifelong learning and staying open to new opportunities will be key to navigating the impact of AI on careers. It’s also important for policymakers and businesses to prioritize workforce development and training programs to ensure that workers are equipped to thrive in an AI-driven economy.

In conclusion, Bill Gurley’s transition from active investing to focusing on his book, foundation, and policy institute reflects a broader shift in the tech industry towards addressing societal challenges and shaping a more sustainable future. As technology continues to evolve and reshape the world around us, it’s crucial for tech leaders to consider the ethical and social implications of their work and strive for positive impact in all aspects of their endeavors.

When David Sacks gave that talk on regulatory capture a few years ago, nobody could have predicted that he would later become a special advisor for AI and crypto in the White House. It’s a surprising turn of events that highlights the unpredictable nature of career trajectories in the tech industry.

In 2018, Mike Moritz of Sequoia sparked controversy when he wrote in the FT that Americans would lose to China if they didn’t start working harder. This sentiment seems to have resonated with many young founders in Silicon Valley, leading to the adoption of a punishing work culture known as the 996 ethos. While some may view this work ethic as extreme, others see it as a necessary shift to regain the competitive edge that Silicon Valley may have lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Having visited China multiple times, I understand what Moritz was getting at when he emphasized the importance of a strong work ethic. While the idea of working long hours may seem daunting to some, it’s worth considering that success in any field often requires dedication and relentless effort. If founders are passionate about their work and believe that going all-in is necessary for success, then embracing the 996 ethos may be the right choice for them.

In my book, I emphasize the importance of mentorship in career development. A great mentor relationship can provide valuable guidance and support, but finding the right mentor can be a challenge. Rather than aiming for high-profile mentors who may be out of reach, I suggest creating personas of aspirational mentors and studying their work from a distance. Additionally, reaching out to mentors who are slightly more accessible and being the first to initiate contact can lead to more successful mentorship opportunities.

I’ve experienced firsthand the impact of providing guidance to aspiring individuals looking to break into venture capital. By giving them a roadmap to follow and assigning them tasks to complete, I was able to filter out those who were truly committed to pursuing a career in the field. This approach highlights the importance of initiative and proactive engagement in seeking mentorship and career opportunities.

The rise of AI has undoubtedly changed the landscape of many industries, including career development. While some may view AI as a threat to traditional career paths, I believe that individuals who take a proactive approach to their careers and embrace AI as a tool for learning and growth can turn it into a superpower. By becoming AI-aware and building a unique path for themselves, individuals can leverage technology to enhance their skills and stand out in a competitive job market.

In conclusion, the tech industry is constantly evolving, and embracing change and innovation is essential for success. Whether it’s adopting a new work culture, seeking mentorship, or leveraging AI for career advancement, staying adaptable and forward-thinking is key to thriving in today’s fast-paced world of tech. David Sacks’ journey from a regulatory capture talk to a special advisor in the White House serves as a testament to the unpredictable nature of career paths in the tech industry.
