Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been indicted by the country’s socialist regime on what he claims are trumped-up political charges designed to dismantle the conservative movement in Brazil. The federal police recently announced that they have submitted a 700-page indictment against Bolsonaro and 35 of his allies for allegedly attempting to “violently dismantle the constitutional state” in 2022.
According to a statement by the police, they uncovered a criminal organization that worked together to keep Bolsonaro in power during his presidency. The case will now be reviewed by the Supreme Court and Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who previously banned the X platform in Brazil.
In response to the charges, Bolsonaro took to the X platform to express his thoughts. He criticized Minister Alexandre de Moraes for allegedly manipulating the investigation, detaining individuals without charges, and engaging in evidence fishing. Bolsonaro stated that he will wait for his lawyer to review the indictment, and he plans to fight the charges through the Attorney General’s Office.
The indictment comes after a recent operation by the federal police that led to the arrest of six military personnel accused of planning the assassination of President Lula and Minister Alexandre de Moraes. Bolsonaro mentioned a message from a judge advisor in Moraes’ office, which suggested using creativity to formalize complaints against political opponents.
The political persecution faced by Bolsonaro is reminiscent of the treatment of former U.S. President Donald Trump and his supporters. The 2022 Brazilian presidential election was also marred by allegations of voter fraud and manipulation of voting machines to benefit the socialist candidate, Lula Inacio da Silva.
Since leaving office in 2023, Bolsonaro has faced continued attacks, including a ban from running for political office for eight years due to his claims about election fraud. Despite these challenges, Bolsonaro’s political movement remains strong, with fresh presidential elections scheduled for 2026.
