Deepdale witnessed an epic battle on Tuesday night as Fulham and Preston North End engaged in the longest penalty shootout in English football history. Following a 1-1 draw in normal time during their Carabao Cup third-round clash, the two teams went on to take an astonishing 34 penalties, with 31 of them finding the back of the net.

This shootout broke the record for the highest-scoring penalty shootout in a major English domestic competition, surpassing the previous record set by Derby County and Carlisle United in 2016. The trend of high-scoring shootouts in recent years reflects the meticulous preparation that teams put into these situations. Fulham, in particular, under the guidance of head coach Marco Silva, had meticulously prepared for penalties, but unfortunately, it did not pay off on this occasion.

The result was a major upset for Fulham, a Championship side, as they were knocked out by Preston, a team that had reached the semi-finals of the competition the previous season. Ryan Ledson, who scored a stunning goal in normal time for Preston, netted the winning penalty after Fulham’s Timothy Castagne missed his spot-kick.

The shootout surpassed a previous marathon penalty drama for Fulham back in 1987 in the Freight Rovers Cup, where they were defeated 11-10 after taking 28 penalties. For Preston, this victory surpassed their previous shootout triumph over Oldham in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The night at Deepdale was filled with drama and excitement as both teams displayed exceptional quality in their penalty-taking. The goalkeepers, Freddie Woodman and Steven Benda, had no chance of saving most of the well-placed and powerful penalties.

In the end, it was Ryan Ledson who secured victory for Preston with a composed penalty, sending the home fans into jubilation. The quality of penalties taken by both teams showcased the level of skill and nerve required in such high-pressure situations.

As the dust settled on this historic night at Deepdale, both teams could take pride in their performance during the marathon shootout, which will be remembered as one of the most thrilling encounters in English football history.
