The widow of a skier who tragically lost his life after falling from a chairlift at Breckenridge Ski Resort has filed a lawsuit against the resort and owner Vail Resorts, alleging negligence led to her husband’s death.

John Perucco, a seasoned skier with 46 years of experience, was at Breckenridge on March 17, 2023, when the incident occurred. According to a complaint filed in Summit County District Court, Perucco, who was 60 years old and an Illinois resident, was on the Zendo chairlift shortly after it opened, accompanied by a friend.

Despite Perucco’s extensive skiing background, he unfortunately fell from the chairlift while trying to clear ice and snow from the seat. The fall resulted in severe injuries, including a broken spine, clavicle, and ribs, as well as damage to his heart and lungs.

After the fall, Breckenridge Ski Patrol responded and transported Perucco to the bottom of the mountain, where he was then taken to the hospital. Tragically, he passed away during the ambulance ride.

The lawsuit alleges that Breckenridge staff failed to properly maintain the chairlift, leading to the unsafe conditions that caused Perucco’s death. Additionally, the complaint claims that the resort did not promptly notify the Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board, hindering the investigation process.

Victoria Sanko-Perucco, the widow of John Perucco, is seeking justice through a jury trial and is requesting compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, and emotional suffering.

While Breckenridge Ski Resort declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings, the tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures in recreational activities.
