Orbán’s Nationalistic Agenda Faces Liberal Backlash

In a striking display of conservative governance, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is advancing his nationalistic and pro-family policies, much to the chagrin of the liberal-globalist factions entrenched within the European establishment.

For context, in a February announcement, Hungary’s government under Orbán took significant steps to curtail public LGBTQ+ events. As noted in a post titled Hungarian Government Under Orbán Chases ‘Gay Pride’ Away From Budapest’s Streets To Protect the Children – Event Must Be Held Indoors at a ‘Closed Space’:

“Buoyed by the resurgence of his ally Donald J. Trump and a rising tide of right-wing populism across Europe, Orbán is intensifying his agenda, much to the horror of the mainstream media in the U.S.”

In a recent development, it was revealed that this year’s Budapest Gay Pride event will occur in a ‘closed venue’ rather than the open streets of central Budapest, a stark departure from tradition.

Orbán’s new child protection legislation meets resistance from the LGBTQ+ community and liberal politicians.

While Orbán’s Fidesz party has successfully passed this controversial legislation, pockets of resistance remain within Hungarian society, spurred on by a supportive mainstream media.

In response to the ban on the annual Budapest Pride march scheduled for late June, the liberal Mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, has taken a defiant stand.

According to the BBC, “Budapest city hall will organize the Budapest Pride march as a local event on June 28, period,” declared the mayor.

This marks a new chapter in the ongoing tug-of-war between nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government, which has police support, and Hungary’s LGBTQ+ community along with its allies, who have found some legal recourse in the courts.

In a creative twist, Karácsony has proposed a ‘Day of Freedom’ organized by the Budapest city council as a workaround for the Pride event, asserting that it doesn’t fall under the restrictions on freedom of assembly.

“They might as well try to ban a procession of unicorns,” the mayor quipped on Facebook.

Under the new laws concerning gatherings passed in March, individuals identified by police through facial recognition technology could face fines ranging from approximately £14 to £420.
