Charles Dolan, Cable Industry Pioneer and Iconic New York Figure, Passes Away at 98
Charles Dolan, a prominent figure in the early cable industry who founded Cablevision, HBO, and AMC Networks, has passed away at the age of 98. News of his death was confirmed by Newsday, the Long Island newspaper owned by the Dolan family.
Dolan’s impact on the television industry was profound. In 1961, he pioneered the expansion of cable in New York with Manhattan Cable Television. A decade later, in 1971, he launched Home Box Office (HBO), a groundbreaking service that collaborated with Hollywood studios to deliver movies to viewers. Dolan was instrumental in leveraging satellite technology to enhance the distribution of cable programming nationwide.
From 1973 to 1985, Dolan was the founder and general partner of the cable company serving Long Island, which evolved into Cablevision, a major multi-system operator in a lucrative market. He later served as the CEO of Cablevision from 1985 to 1995. The company’s programming division eventually became AMC Networks, housing channels like AMC, IFC, WeTV, SundanceTV, BBC America, as well as streaming services such as AMC+ and Shudder.
As of September 2020, Dolan held the position of chairman emeritus at AMC Networks.
In a 2018 interview, Dolan shared the origins of HBO, which stemmed from a service initially provided to upscale New York hotels for movie distribution. The channel, initially known as the Green Channel, was rebranded as Home Box Office in 1972 after receiving investment from Time Inc.
By the 1990s, Dolan’s influence extended to iconic New York venues and sports teams, including the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, Madison Square Garden, and Radio City Music Hall. His son James has since taken on leadership roles within MSG and other family businesses. The Dolan family sold Cablevision for $17.7 billion to Altice USA in 2016.
Born in Cleveland, Dolan served in the Air Force before pursuing a career in media. His legacy as a pioneer in the cable industry and a key figure in shaping modern television will endure.
Rest in peace, Charles Dolan. Your contributions to the entertainment industry will always be remembered.
