Ssense: A New Chapter Begins

Ssense, the Canadian retailer known for its unique selection of independent brands, is embarking on a new phase. On February 18, the founders of Ssense received approval from the Quebec Superior Court to buy out the company, marking a significant milestone in their journey. Last month, CEO Rami Atallah and his brothers, Firas and Bassel, successfully bid to retain ownership of the company as it emerges from bankruptcy protection.

With the approval in place, the Atallah family will now lead Ssense through the bankruptcy protection process. A spokesperson for the company expressed gratitude for the support received during this challenging time and emphasized their commitment to sustaining operations, protecting jobs, and providing stability for employees, customers, suppliers, and partners. The focus remains on moving culture forward and amplifying the voices that shape it.

However, community support for Ssense has fluctuated over the past year. In August 2025, the retailer filed for bankruptcy protection under Canada’s Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) after facing challenges following the imposition of high tariffs by the US on Canadian goods. This led to layoffs and customer complaints about additional fees, delayed shipments, and customer service issues. Despite these difficulties, Ssense was able to restructure the business under the founding family in September.

As Ssense looks to the future, there are questions about what the company’s direction will be. Known for its focus on independent brands, the retailer will need to prioritize these partnerships to maintain its unique identity. Industry experts believe that staying true to this vision is essential for Ssense’s success.

While the road ahead may present challenges, some see this as an opportunity for a much-needed reset. With a chance to refine their strategy and refocus on their core values, Ssense has the potential to redefine its place in the market. By understanding their customer base and staying true to their founding vision, Ssense can carve out a distinct position in the competitive retail landscape.

As Ssense enters this new chapter, the company’s founders are poised to lead the way forward. With a commitment to authenticity and a renewed focus on independent brands, Ssense is ready to write the next chapter of its story.
