Attention all fitness enthusiasts in the Northwest Side of Chicago: There is a troubling trend of car burglaries occurring in gym parking lots. Chicago police have issued a community alert to warn residents about this crime pattern, which has been ongoing since January and appears to be escalating.
The modus operandi of the car burglars involves targeting gym parking lots, where they wait for individuals to exit their vehicles and head inside for a workout. Once the victims are inside the gym, the burglars smash their car windows and steal any valuables left behind.
While CPD has linked four specific crimes to this pattern, there may be more incidents that have gone unreported. The known burglaries took place in the 3400 block of West Addison on January 11 and April 14, the 2100 block of North Pulaski on April 7, and the 4900 block of West North Avenue on April 16.
According to the community alert, one or two men are responsible for these burglaries. One of the suspects is described as having a dark beard and wearing a black durag along with a black shirt featuring a goat design.
Area Five detectives are leading the investigation into these crimes and can be reached at 312-746-6554 in reference to crime pattern #P25-5-013CA.
