Cher has recently released her memoir, titled “Cher: The Memoir β€” Part One,” where she addresses the use of her son Chaz’s deadname in the book. The 78-year-old singer clarified in the author’s note that she refers to her son as Chas, the name he went by during the years covered in the memoir. Cher explained that Chaz has granted his blessing for this usage and that in the next volume, she will refer to him as Chaz.

The memoir is dedicated to Cher’s mother, Georgia, her sister, Georganne, and her two children, Chaz and Elijah. Chaz was born in 1969 to Cher and Sonny Bono, five years before their divorce in 1974. Cher won custody of Chaz the following year. Cher then married Gregg Allman in 1975 and welcomed Elijah in 1976 before splitting in 1979.

Cher reminisces about Chaz’s birth in the memoir, recalling Sonny Bono’s excitement for a son. Despite giving birth to a daughter, Chastity Sun, Cher remembers Bono’s joy over their child.

Throughout the years, Cher has been open about her journey as a mother after Chaz came out as a lesbian and later underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2009. Cher shared in a 2020 interview with CNN that she initially struggled with Chaz’s sexuality but eventually accepted and supported him. Chaz later expressed his desire to transition, which Cher fully embraced.

Cher admitted that the journey wasn’t easy, especially hearing Chaz’s old voicemail message. However, she emphasized that you don’t truly lose someone; they just take on a different form. Chaz, who made history as the first transgender person on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2011, is now incredibly happy in his life.
