The tension between China and Taiwan escalated as China’s military conducted 10 hours of live-fire exercises around Taiwan. US President Donald Trump downplayed the seriousness of the drills, stating that naval exercises in that area have been a regular occurrence for the past 20 years. Trump emphasized his good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping and mentioned that Xi had not informed him about the exercises.

The exercises, named “Justice Mission 2025,” involved army, navy, air, and rocket force operations by the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theatre Command. The Chinese military aimed to test its combat readiness, blockade Taiwan’s ports, and deter external forces. This display of military might came shortly after the US approved an $11 billion arms sale to Taiwan, the largest weapons procurement deal between Washington and Taipei.

Taiwan’s defense ministry reported the detection of 130 Chinese military aircraft and 14 naval vessels near its airspace. The increased military activity led to disruptions in commercial air travel, affecting over 100,000 passengers. Beijing claims sovereignty over Taiwan and has threatened to use force if Taiwan resists its pressure.

In response to the drills, Taiwan condemned China’s actions and accused the Chinese Communist party of threatening global peace and stability. Taiwan vowed to remain prepared alongside its democratic partners to counter Beijing’s threats. Chinese military officials justified the exercises as a means to oppose “Taiwan independence” and external interference, emphasizing the legitimacy and legality of their actions.

The escalation in military activity around Taiwan could strain US-China relations, especially following the trade war truce between the two countries in October. The drills also reignited tensions between China and Japan, with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warning of a potential military response from Tokyo in the event of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

In conclusion, the military exercises around Taiwan underscore the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region and the potential implications for global peace and stability. It is essential for all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions to avoid further escalation of tensions.
