The Norwegian Government Accuses Chinese-backed Hacking Group of Espionage

The Norwegian government has pointed fingers at the Chinese-backed hacking group known as Salt Typhoon for infiltrating several organizations within the country. This accusation was made public in a report released by the Norwegian Police Security Service on Friday.

According to the report, Salt Typhoon, believed to be operating under the direction of the Chinese government, exploited vulnerabilities in network devices to carry out espionage activities. This revelation adds Norway to the growing list of countries that have fallen victim to Salt Typhoon’s cyber attacks.

Salt Typhoon has earned a reputation as a formidable threat by senior U.S. national security officials. The group has a history of penetrating the networks of critical infrastructure organizations worldwide, including telecom providers in Canada and the United States. In these instances, Salt Typhoon allegedly intercepted sensitive communications from high-ranking politicians, prompting a heightened focus on cybersecurity measures within the telecommunications industry.

Despite the severity of the situation, the report did not delve into specific details regarding the hacking campaign targeting Norway. At this time, the Norwegian embassy in the U.S. has not provided any additional comments or clarifications on the matter.
