Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge related to a London nightclub incident that has shadowed the Grammy-winning artist for over two years. Appearing at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, Brown acknowledged the charge of affray, leading prosecutors to dismiss more serious charges that were slated for trial later this year. This plea represents a key development in one of Brown’s most significant legal battles in recent times.

As a result, Chris Brown will no longer face trial over accusations of assaulting music producer Abraham Diaw during the incident at Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district in February 2023. Instead, both Brown and his co-defendant, vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, who also pleaded guilty to the public order offense, will appear in court for sentencing later this year.

At Southwark Crown Court, Brown, 37, and Akinlolu, 40, confirmed their identities and both pleaded guilty to the charge of affray. This plea indicates their admission to using or threatening unlawful violence in a manner that would cause someone of reasonable firmness at the scene to fear for their safety. Under U.K. law, this offense can result in a maximum prison sentence of three years.

Judge Tony Baumgartner accepted the guilty pleas and granted both individuals bail ahead of sentencing, stating that “all options” remain on the table when deciding the appropriate punishment.

Prosecutors Drop More Serious Charges

The guilty plea shifts the trajectory of the case significantly. Prosecutors confirmed that charges for attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm, assault causing actual bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon would not proceed. Brown and Akinlolu had denied these charges and were due to stand trial in October.

The Crown Prosecution Service noted that the decision to drop these charges came after accepting the guilty plea to affray, negating the need for a prolonged criminal trial concerning the nightclub incident.

Allegations Stem From 2023 Nightclub Incident

The case revolves around an altercation involving music producer Abraham Diaw at Tape nightclub in London’s upscale Mayfair area in February 2023. Prosecutors claimed that Brown allegedly struck Diaw with a tequila bottle, and the conflict continued as Diaw tried to leave. It was also alleged that the incident occurred in front of numerous witnesses and was captured on the venue’s surveillance cameras.

Following Friday’s hearing, Crown Prosecution Service senior prosecutor Claire Campbell characterized the incident as “a vicious and unprovoked attack,” emphasizing that such violence is unacceptable in public settings and no one is above the law.

While the prosecution initially aimed to pursue several serious charges stemming from the nightclub attack, these will no longer be addressed in court following Brown’s guilty plea.

Arrest Came Two Years After the Incident

Although the alleged assault took place in early 2023, Chris Brown was not apprehended until May 2025, upon his return to the United Kingdom for the first time since the incident. His arrest briefly jeopardized his “Breezy Bowl XX” world tour when he was initially denied bail. However, a judge later granted his release after he posted a £5 million security guarantee, allowing the tour to continue as planned.

Brown has remained free throughout the legal process and was once again granted bail after the hearing on Friday.

Supporters of Chris Brown gathered outside Southwark Crown Court, both before and after the hearing, to cheer for the singer as he exited the building. Fans chanted his nickname, “Breezy,” and Brown took a moment to sign autographs before leaving in a waiting vehicle.

The courtroom appearance garnered significant media attention, highlighting the ongoing public interest in both the legal proceedings and Brown’s music career, which has spanned two decades.

Sentencing Scheduled for October

Brown and Akinlolu are set to return to Southwark Crown Court on October 26 for sentencing. The charge of affray carries a maximum prison sentence of three years, though the court has various sentencing options based on the specifics of the offense, aggravating factors, and the guilty pleas of the defendants.

The conclusion of the criminal case follows separate civil proceedings related to the incident. Diaw had previously pursued a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Brown for the alleged assault but later withdrew the claim.

For now, the guilty plea brings the London nightclub attack case closer to resolution. Although Chris Brown has avoided facing trial for the more serious allegations initially levied against him, the final result will be revealed when the court issues its sentence in October.
