Exploring Zen Gardens with Christian Wijnants Fall Collection
Christian Wijnants has always found inspiration in simplicity and restraint. This fall, the designer looked to Japanese karesansui, or landscaped Zen gardens, to create a collection that embodies tranquility and elegance. Drawing from the raked lines and sense of stillness found in these gardens, Wijnants crafted sculptural silhouettes that evoke a sense of serenity.
The key outerwear pieces in this collection echo ceremonial robes and monastic styles, with cocooned shoulders and marked waists. The Cumba coat in moss wool and the Jirono jacket, featuring front panels that can be tied into a sculptural knot, are standout pieces that capture the essence of Zen gardens. This theme carries through to knitwear and accessories, with superfine knitwear showcasing graceful, enlarged ribbing reminiscent of the stones and moss found in these serene gardens.
Wijnants, with over 20 years of experience in the industry, has cultivated a loyal following that appreciates his dedication to craftsmanship. This fall, fans can expect a range of well-constructed pieces, including cropped shirting, blazers layered over detachable shirt bibs, and garments with integrated scarf panels for added dimension. Prints inspired by French landscape photographer Quentin Chamard-Bois bring to life sun-dappled forests and falling leaves, while the color palette transitions from soft hues like sand and seafoam to deeper tones like moss and rust.
While the collection will not have a traditional PFW show, it will be showcased in Antwerp in June as part of a festival celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Antwerp Six. This will mark Wijnants’s debut show in his hometown, giving fans a chance to experience his designs in person. However, the true essence of this collection is best appreciated in a runway format, where the ideas, shapes, colors, and materials can truly come to life.
